National Family Dialogue

The National Family Dialogue 3rd annual meeting was held on April 10-12, 2012

The National Family Dialogue held its 3rd annual meeting in Washington DC during the 2012 Joint Meeting on Adolescent Treatment Effectiveness. 23 Family members from 17 states and 2 tribal nations met to discuss the NFD's past year progress, successes, and the goals for the upcoming 2012/2013 year.

The discussion themes for the 2012 NFD meetings were:

  • NFD history review and highlights
  • What are we going to do and how are we going to do it
  • What are the most important things for the NFD to accomplish this year
  • Next steps

In the Thursday meeting, we were joined by Twyla Adams, the new Branch Chief for Targeted Populations as well as Andrea Kopstein - Director of the Division for Services Improvement at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. They both talked about what is happening within  the adolescent population branch at CSAT.  The NFD participants asked questions and made recommendations for improving family involvement within the substance use disorder arena

Several family members also presented in various sessions during the conference including:

  • Health Care Reform and Family Voice
  • Community, Family, and School Collaborations
  • Social Marketing, Media and Stigma Reduction
  • Families: Research on Family to Family Peer Services

On of the Highlights of JMATE 2012 was the Youth and Family Plenary session. 5 Youth in recovery and 5 Family members participated in a Question /Answer session. The Moderator, Laurie Dhue, a former CNN reporter engaged the panel with questions revolving around the treatment and recovery process. The purpose of the panel was to engage the audience and demonstrate the crucial contribution of youth and family voices in the treatment and recovery process through collaboration, stigma reduction, systems improvement, effective treatment, united long-term recovery efforts and relapse prevention.   this was a call to action! a call asking the JMATE participants to join in embedding youth and family voices in all aspects of the work they do.

The 2012 JMATE theme was “Collaborating and Integrating to Support Youth and Families in an Era of Change.” Within the current era of change and reform in treatment and numerous other systems, stakeholders serving youth—adolescents ages 12–17 years and transitional age youth 18–27 years—need to develop meaningful ways to coordinate and, in some cases, integrate their services while maintaining youth and family voices. The 2012 JMATE will serve as a platform for these stakeholders to gather to learn and share information about evidence-based practices (EBPs), youth and family issues, and effective collaboration and integration strategies. Federal Blockgrant Update: Our Voices were Heard

Thank you to everyone who took the time to contact SAMSHA regarding the block grant.  SAMHSA received over 500 letters!   Here is a list of the most frequent comments in support of revisions to the Block Grant application:

1.      Allowing States to submit a biannual plan instead of an annual plan.

2.      Having a standard format for both the MHSBG and SAPTBG.

3.      SAMHSA's efforts to encourage States to use the revised Block Grant application process to be better prepared to respond to several major Federal initiatives.

4.      Focus on planning for populations that are uninsured and below 133% of the Federal poverty level that may become insured in FY 2014.

5.      Inclusion of family involvement, tribal consultation and a focus on the provision of recovery support services.

6.      Commending SAMHSA on including adolescents as a target group that States can include in their needs assessment and State Plan.

Thank you so much for letting your voice be heard.

MOMSTELL Founder Sharon L. Smith Helped To Organize Families Of Youth With Substance Use Addiction: A National Dialogue

A national dialogue took place in Rockville, MD.  The meeting included 65 members of families of youth impacted by the disease of addiction from 34 states and tribes across the United States, along with representatives from Georgetown University, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Family members identified several challenge areas in treatment and recovery for youth with substance use disorders.  The top two challenges are 1) a lack of education and information support for family members and 2) a lack of access to substance abuse treatment for youth and their families.  Other challenges include 3) a lack of integrated treatment for youth with both substance abuse and mental health disorders, 4) the stigma and misunderstanding of the disease of substance abuse and addiction, and 5) the quality of treatment for youth with the disease.

Work was begun at the conference to build a national clearinghouse to contain a centralized repository of information for families and others who need this information.  Also, web accessible training will occur on topics such as financial strategies for providing treatment, recovery services, and education on addiction issues.

Family representatives from the states and tribes developed a plan to immediately begin working on the major issues in their state/tribe, to meet with state/tribe substance abuse agency heads and other parent organizations, and to make affirmative changes in the challenge areas not only in their state/tribe, but also in the nation.  Attendees will continue to work as a group, and will be joined by others to fight this disease.  Sharon Smith, one of the conference organizers, said, “We are building a national voice for positive change in youth substance abuse treatment and recovery.”

NFD Webinar Series:

We held our first NFD webinar on January 27th, 2010. The guest speaker was Flo Hilliard, a national trainer and a faculty member and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. She spoke regarding “ The Brain, Behavior and Addiction”.  Here are just a few of the comments made by the participants:

  • This meeting was very informative. So glad to see the NFD up and running with such valuable information and terrific presenters. As a freelance health writer, and a mother, this has greatly helped my own research into the brain science of addiction. Look forward to more NFD webinars in the future.
  • Flo, your presentation was very informative.
  • The webinar was absolutely incredible.  I am ready to listen to Ms. Hilliard repeat it all! I would sit down to that presentation several times and still gain new, helpful information. I learned so much.
